Seed Sowing
This month is the start of our busy seed sowing period. The moon is currently waxing as we write this, so we are frantically sowing seed into trays and individual, sustainable pots to kick off some lovely seasonal plants, due to be looking lush in spring.
The moon will be full by the end of this week. An important detail to note, as many gardeners and farmers follow moon phase planting principals. It is believed to influence many factors such as soil moisture and plant growth patterns due to the moon's gravitational pull, and little bit of extra light leading to healthier plants, aiding germination and providing better yields. Similar to the changing tides at the beach, the moon's gravitational pull draws moisture up from deeper soil and improves water absorption and uptake for the plants. There is so much planning to be done with seasonal seed sowing, from the beginning when blooms appear, pollination occurs, the seeds develop, are sown and germinate, right up to when the mature plant flowers again. So, these moon phases help outline when certain tasks that need to be completed. However, we need to anticipate some disruptions, as mother nature has the final say on how well plants will perform. Weather, humidity, temperature, water and carbon dioxide all play crucial roles in plant growth, not to mention the importance of that big, round, yellow thing in the sky.
A few new lovely plants will feature this spring through to autumn this year and next, to keep our wonderful gardeners enthused and enthralled. The team also look forward to this exciting time of seed sowing, watching new garden life grow, transforming into something vibrant and healthy after nurturing it to life. Seed sowing requires careful labeling, no distractions and differing temperatures, light requirements and stratification/scarification. Heat pads and grow lights can make this process easier with the differing requirements of each seed type. We hope with the recent low light, rain & cloud that the sun may appear more regularly soon and our seedlings will grow up to be beautiful and healthy.
Some spring flowers in our customer's gardens are already blooming at this time of year, a sign that temperatures have been all over the place as of late. Jack Frost may be waiting behind that garden wall waiting to crash the party, but let's hope he got the memo that he was not invited and will stay at bay!
