| In Rhythm with the Season, Guided by Nature’s Pull |
We can feel the approach of spring, and with it comes magnolia trees flowering, birds building their new subdivisions in the trees surrounding the nursery, and newly-sprung basal growth from our herbaceous plants.
Seed sowing is increasing and will continue to increase in varieties up until October/November, for the Spring/Summer range for the cottage gardens. This has been particularly enjoyable just like a new spring wardrobe, the range will have a mix of very pretty floral additions, some of them unusual.
The team have an important get-together every month to discuss, plan, brainstorm problems with production, and choose seed, plants for propagation or ideas to try that may make production better. This collective approach has a great outcome, it means each team member is valued, has input, and therefore the team works well in a rhythm, having a positive outcome for the nursery. We do like a shared lunch alongside this, which of course helps tremendously!
We have a good classic range of roses to introduce to our collection this summer. While they are not David Austen's which are readily available at other retail garden centres, we do have some varieties that we feel will snuggle in well within the cottage garden, and sit nicely among the perennials we produce here at Puriri Lane @ Addenbrooke.
Without giving any more away about our Summer range, the roses are a lovely addition.
This week, our Garden marketing lady and Nursery Teams along with Addenbrooke owners, visited the trade show in Hamilton. An excellent event for the horticultural industry, which features suppliers of plants, pots, tools, trees, machinery and more. A fabulous opportunity to network with industry knowledge.
Both our teams and Addenbrooke owners gathered afterwards for lunch at Woodlands Estate, where team building over lunch & laughter was enjoyed, finishing off the day nicely.
Much the same as going on a holiday, stepping out of your usual rhythm to see & learn, network, or gather information to bring back again to your usual, has a positive effect of renewed enthusiasm. Whether it is work or home, having a great team helps, production increases, vibrations are higher, and lunches important!
