Tales: From The Potting Shed - Issue #6

Spring Awakening

There is a special kind of magic in the air as spring begins. The mornings are still crisp, but the garden is stirring from its winter slumber and each day brings a new delight to discover.

The daffodils have been the first to wave hello, their cheerful faces a sure sign that brighter days are here. Blossoms are beginning to unfurl across the garden, and the hum of busy bees reminds us just how alive the garden has become again. Everywhere you look, tender green shoots are pushing up through the soil, a promise of the colour and abundance to come.

In the potting shed, we have been sowing seeds of cottage favourites such as cosmos, poppies and fragrant sweet peas. If you have been thinking about starting a little cutting garden of your own, now is the time. A tip from our own planting is to try sowing by the moon phases. It is a rhythm that gardeners have followed for centuries and one we enjoy here.

Spring also asks us to tend to what is already established. Roses are grateful for a feed now and a light prune will encourage fresh healthy growth. Of course, with all this new life comes a few uninvited visitors, so keep an eye out for snails and aphids who are equally excited about spring’s arrival.

Beyond the garden beds, we have enjoyed the simple pleasure of that first morning cup of tea outside, wrapped in a scarf of course, listening to Tui singing among the magnolias. It is these small moments that make spring feel so joyful.

As you plan your own spring days, do come and see us. The nursery is filling with treasures ready to find a home in your garden, and the gift shop is brimming with botanical finds for spring entertaining. If you fancy a slower pace, our Devonshire Tea Open Days are the perfect excuse to linger amongst the flowers.

Spring is a season of beginnings and we look forward to sharing it with you.
