Pulmonaria | longifolia
A wonderful ground cover - winter dormant in colder areas. Plants are happy in a shade garden although a bit of morning sun is perfectly fine - the hot afternoon sun can be too punishing.
The flowers buds as they open are tinged rosy pink and turn to blue. Pulmonarias prefer a moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Whilst they are reasonably drought tolerant, a consistently dry soil doesn't really give the best results so we find a layer of mulch helpful.
Pulmonaria are actually short-lived plants by nature and the only way to maintain them on a long-term basis is to divide the clumps every three or four years and this can be done in both autumn and winter, when the entire clump can be lifted, teased apart, and then replanted in smaller clumps. In fact any season that you have time to divide the plant will work! In the garden!
The silver spots on Pulmonaria leaves are actually the result of foliar air pockets, which are used for cooling the lower surface of the leaves. These air pockets mask the appearance of chlorophyll in the leaves, creating the the little white bleached irregular spots that we enjoy on this plant.
Thrives in a heavy moist soil and neither asks for nor receives any extra attention beyond the bare minimum from us! Adored by bees which you can see from this photo I took in our garden.
A great little flower for picking as well!
Plants are easy to split once clumps have established
