This lovely Pulmonaria, sometimes called Blue Cowslip, (which is much prettier than its other common name of Lungwort!) is one of the earliest plants to bloom in our garden. In early spring it brings a lovely splash of bright colour to go with all the pretty bulbs and woodland flowers such as Hellebores, Daffodils, Snowdrops, etc. Trumpet shaped, bright pink blooms turn
to cobalt blue as they age. They are in fact a first cousin to the forget-me-not!
The name pulmonaria arose from the foliage, which is green with white spots, resembling a diseased lung ... hence the common name. Herbalists have long thought that when a plant resembles a particular body part, it must have medicinal properties to cure that particular part of the body. There is a continued use of pulmonaria to treat many respiratory ailments.
Pulmonaria are perennials that grow to 25 cm tall and 60 cm wide. In warmer areas they are evergreen, just need a little tidying up before the bloom in early spring. But in cooler areas they die right back in late autumn and push out new leaves and flowers together in the spring, keeping the foliage until the autumn. such and interesting plant, and that blue!!!
