Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata | Blue Barlow

Also known as Granny Bonnets or Columbines, this stunning Aquilegia was actually bred for cut flower production. Flowering from late spring to early summer this colour is sure to elicit comment from garden visitors. The flower stems rise gracefully above the grey-green divided lacy foliage. A lovely addition to the shade garden. Bred for the cut flower market each plant produces 3 to 5 stems in the first year and 5 to 10 stems in the second year. The flowers are fully double and spurless.
Blue Barlow grows in a bushy upright clump to around 70cm in height by about 45-50cm Wide. Whilst considered a short-lived perennial which can actually be anything up to five years but don't despair as this little beauty will actually self-sow and will form large colonies in conditions that it enjoys.
Performs best in either full sun or part shade but in hotter climates, a shadier position will be appreciated with morning sun rather than the searing afternoon sun. Aquilegias seriously dislike poorly drained soils but does appreciate some moisture as conversely does not like to dry out so we find that mulching provides the conditions that they enjoy in our gardens. Attractrdraft to butterflies. A perfect choice for a cottage garden, and lasts well in a vase or bouquet
