Lagurus ovatus is such a pretty ornamental grass. The name ‘Bunny’s Tail’ or 'Hare's Tail' perfectly describes its fur-like fluffy tails that start off with a soft green tinge and then soften as they age to a gorgeous buff colour and add a touch to of whimsy to your garden and will be loved by little ones as well so the perfect choice for a child's first garden plant.
Lagurus ovatus is a short green-leaved grass that has a clumping habit. The cute fluffy tails look lovely as an edging in your garden and whilst adding texture. Whilst it is an annual, it may be hardy in some milder areas or where it can be protected from frost. A pretty addition to a wildflower or cottage garden.
This grass works especially well with flowers that bloom in late summer and autumn. The fluffy tails dry exceptionally well and you can leave them on the plant if want to keep them as an accent in your winter garden, or cut and dry them by hanging in a bunch upside down. They dry beautifully and last for months, refusing to shatter the way some textured grasses do after drying. Perfect in a pot or the garden.
This grass is a novice gardener's dream plant as it is so forgiving. Apart from the fact that it is drought tolerant once established, it also thrives in sandy soil as well. It loves lots of sun and is fine if you forget to water it once established. It is perfect for neglected well drained areas in your garden and will add lots of texture and interest.
We do get frosts here and have not had any issues even when planting out small seedlings but if you get hard frosts then some protection would be a good idea.
