Helleborus orientalis
Also known as the Lenten Rose this wonderful plant brightens up a shady spot with its beautiful, cupped flowers from mid to late Winter when not much else is flowering. Orientalis has many varieties, but we think that this is what is so attractive about them.
Hellebores thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil. They will tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from shade to sun, but we find that the best results are gained with a partially shaded position. We have them planted under deciduous trees and find that they enjoy this position.
Hellebores actually do not require division and will form a large attractive colony if left to naturalise as we have done in our gardens. The shades of this lovely variety are varied and can be a mix of plummy shades and some may even be white, but the delight is in anticipation of what flowers. These plants will self-sow, and you may get some interesting variations - I have even had a beautiful double from a self-sown seedling.
They make an excellent evergreen ground cover with their large, serrated leaves and we love to underplant them with violets - we have some lovely ones for this purpose pretty apricot collectors viola Irish Elegance and Comte di Brazzi a stunning double white. Height: 50cm x 45cm Wide
