Linum perenne
Also known as flax flower, Linum perenne is a semi evergreen perennial that forms tufts of narrow blue-green leaves and masses of sky blue flowers that are about 2.5cm in diameter that flower over a long season.
Flowering from late spring and into mid summer these plants flower prolifically often for up to twelve weeks. The flowers only last for a day but the masses of them makes up for this.
The flowers are borne atop wiry stems with masses of nodding flower buds which makes up for the fact that they only flower for a short time. The stems are tough and difficult to break and were back in the day used to make both linen and rope. This tough little plant can cope with heat and humidity and is also drought tolerant and in addition to this puts on a spectacular display when in flower and looks striking when planted en masse.
A great choice for the fronts of borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens and of course the popular meadow style gardens. Prune plants after flowering to keep them from becoming leggy. Plants perform best in full sun - a minimum of six hours but will tolerate some partial shade and are a great choice for hot, dry positions but do appreciate well drained soils.
