perfect for pollinators

So beautifully fragrant, Viburnum x burwoodii (Burkwood Viburnum) is a multi-stemmed upright shrub that has glossy dark green leaves that change to shades of maroon in autumn.  In mid spring this attractive plant stars with red to dark pink flower buds that ultimately open to masses of small white flowers tinged every so softly with pink that are like snowballs on the stems that are about 6cm in diameter.

These beautiful flowers last for approximately two weeks at which time they give way to attractive pendulous clusters of red berries which last on the plant right into mid to late summer.  The berries however are not overly showy as they are often obscured by the leaves. This lovely plant does have a wide season of interest from spring through to late autumn.

A wonderful specimen plant that also makes an attractive flowering hedge or right at home in the perennial border too.  Be sure to plant it near high foot traffic areas so that you can enjoy its beautiful fragrance.  A good choice for clay soil and even happy in sandy soils.

Plants will perform best in full sun or part shade and is easily grown with average moisture levels but it does like good drainage. This versatile plant will however tolerate a wide range of soil types and will even adapt in poor soil and tolerates heat and drought once established.  A layer of mulch to help keep up moisture levels is appreciated! Loved by butterflies.

A lovely flower for cutting.  Plants with woody stems should be cut with sharp secateurs at a sharp angle and then split up them upwards from the bottom by about 2.5cm. Never crush the stems as this will damage the stem tissue and inhibits uptake of water.

Easy care, Viburnum x burkwoodii should be pruned immediately after flowering to retain its shape.
