Enkianthus campanulatus
A very pretty and elegant shrub that deserves a place in your garden. If you can grow pieris or erica's or rhododendrons in your garden then you will want this pretty little-known shrub. Particularly suited though to cooler climates. Likes good soil and a sunny to semi-shaded position. If you have hot summers then you will want to plant this in a shady position with some respite from the hot afternoon sun.
It is a hardy shrub that originates from north and eastern Asia from altitudes that make it a hardy choice for gardens. In spring this shrub has very pretty bell-shaped flowers that are a creamy pink. When the flowering has finished the foliage is an attractive green and once autumn arrives the foliage turns stunning shades of scarlet and gold. The perfect choice for a woodland garden situation and as it is deciduous it is the perfect spot to site some bulbs for underplanting such as crocus to time for the autumnal colours or perhaps galanthus or more delicate bulbs to time their arrival for when the plant is still dormant.
