Hydrangea Annabelle is a firm favourite with us and deservedly so.  Hailing from the USA and known as the "Smooth Hydrangea" Annabelle is an outstanding flowering shrub for a shaded area.  Deciduous in winter but by early summer Annabelle produces huge, rounded flower heads that brighten those shady areas of the garden.  Flowering for up to two months, the flower heads start out lime-green and mature to a brilliant white and then back to pale green again in late summer and then ageing to a buff colour.  Annabelle is a perfect subject for drying.  Annabelle has been the recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Annabelle is very hardy and will still flower well even if cut back quite hard each year.  Smaller plants may require staking due to the size of their huge flower heads.  In full flower, Annabelle will take your breath away. Whilst Annabelle can be grown in full sun or dappled shade, the hotter your climate the more shade is needed and she is relatively drought tolerant, but in hot climates will require regular moisture and some mulch.  Perfect for a hedge, or in a mixed border or even in a pot, Annabelle also makes an excellent backdrop for your perennials.  Annabelle flowers on new wood so pruning needs to happen late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous growth.  The harder you prune (even to the ground) the larger the flower-heads will be.

A perfect choice for cut flowers as well as drying.
