This is a beautiful, small variety of Crepe Myrtle that produces ruby-mauve flowers in the summer and autumn. The tree can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and wide and has deep green foliage that turns orange in the autumn. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is drought tolerant. Protect from harsh winds and heavy frosts though as it burns easily.
Prune late winter and remove spent blooms to encourage a second flush.
Water often until the roots form, then water weekly during the first few growing seasons.
It needs extra watering of up to twice a week during periods of intense heat.
Mulch the soil to protect the roots from heat in Spring.
Crepe myrtles are native to the East Asia regions of the world, and they attract birds and bees and provide shade in summer and sun in winter. Some crepe myrtles can live for 100 years or more! We have several different varieties of these around the gardens at Addenbrooke, including our large feature tree at the entrance to the new Pear Garden. They are deciduous and have pale bark branches giving good winter interest.
