Autumn is a great time to plant Pieris as the soil becomes moist and it is still reasonably warm and allows the plant to become established before winter which will help them to withstand dry periods during the following summer.

Young plants may require thorough watering through dry periods for the first few years although mulching will definitely help to conserve moisture as well as keeping the weeds at bay. Just keep the mulch away from the main stem of the plant.

If you are planting into clay soils, it is advisable to add extra topsoil and we often find mounding the plant up to assist with drainage but also Incorporating coarse sand, bark, compost or other organic material will assist with improving the soil structure.

The stunning large creamy white bell flowers are produced on long racemes above the foliage in mid-late winter. The new oval shaped young foliage as it emerges is a striking apricot-orange colour which turns to a deep glossy green as they mature.

Before planting your pieris plant, ensure the root ball is saturated and remove the planter pot with minimal root disturbance. Plant your plant at the same level as in the container. When preparing your hole, dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball and firm the plant in and water once planted.

Make sure your plant is watered well until established if planting in drier plants.  Plant with some general slow release fertiliser and then every spring apply an organic based fertiliser such as blood and bone at a handful per square meter as new growth begins.

The first summer and autumn after planting is a key time for young plants. Make sure you water them thoroughly during dry periods.
Pieris are easy to care for and never normally need pruning other than the removal of spent flowers.

Occasionally thrips can be a problem in areas where summers are humid.

Prefers deep fertile acidic soil in semi-shade.
