Amelanchier canadensis also known Shadbush and Canadian Serviceberry to name a few is a stunning dense upright multi-stemmed large shrub or small tree that has a domed crown.
In mid spring the bare stems are covered in erect sprays of small white starry flowers just before the coppery finely toothed leaves appear changing to green as they age. The flowers that are lightly fragrant. Following the flowers, the tree sometimes becomes clothed in small blue-black berries in early summer. The berries are liked by both birds and humans and can be used to make jams, jellies and pies! The foliage in autumn is stunning and turns to brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn so is a real statement in the garden. Once the leaves have fallen, its elegant growth habit and light grey coloured bark is revealed with the bark having charcoal-grey striations or grooves. This lovely plant has four seasons of interest and is lovely to use around ponds, lakes and streams or in boggy or marshy ground.
