The common name of the Grape Hyacinth is a reference to the clusters of small, delicate bell shaped, blue to purple urn shaped flowers, which resemble clusters of grapes. Although mostly grown as an ornamental plant, the Grape Hyacinth is also provides an excellent early and rich source of nectar for bees in spring.
In Europe it is often found in abandoned fields, scrub and in exposed rocky places and prefers a rich open well-drained soil and a sunny position, but it's easily grown in any well-drained soil. It is a perfect candidate for a rock garden or wildflower meadow.
Grape hyacinth will not grow in the shade but it is fully hardy.
This little bulb is in flower in mid to late spring. Interestingly, the flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. The plant is self-fertile.
Grows to 30 cm tall and 10 cm wide but will naturalise over time creating a gorgeous blue carpet of delicate colour in the spring.
A very ornamental and easily grown plant.
Our plants are in 1 Litre pots and contain approx 25-30 bulbs.
