The rich large intense dark blue bracts of this annual Sage or Salvia viridis is a must for the summer garden. This striking colour is prized by gardeners for its spectacular display whilst adding a vertical accent to garden borders as well as container plantings.
The plant grows vigorously in multi-branched clumps and will thrive in full sun to light shade but does like a well-drained position so a handful of gravel and raising the plant can help with this requirement.
The flowers are also perfect for picking as they last so well and also are a great subject for drying as the dark colour is retained, so an absolute must for the picking garden and the foliage is also fabulous. Deadheading or cutting as a cut flower will ensure that this plant keeps on providing you with flowers all summer long. In addition to this the bees and butterflies will love you for planting this!
Salvia horminum blends beautifully with other perennials and annuals and does look particularly striking plants with Briza maxima or Briza media grasses which you can find available here
Leave some seed heads on as this plant will self-sow and will ensure new volunteers pop up for the following season
