Scabiosa japonica var. alpina | Ritz Blue
This little perennial Scabiosa is a compact plant that has wiry stems of floaty mauve coloured flowers that are about 4cm in diameter. The great thing about this little variety is that it has a very long flowering season which can be from as early as spring into summer and right into autumn. Plants form a low mound of grey-green, somewhat ferny foliage, bearing small round flowers in a soft lavender-blue shade.
Perfect in the sunny rock garden, but also useful at the front of the border for edging or in mixed containers. Scabiosa flowers are attractive to butterflies. Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage more buds to form. A reliable performer and great as a cut flower.
Plants readily self sow but little seedlings are easily removed and placed elsewhere.
